This Blog started out as a record of my efforts to compete in the Gt Eastern Half Marathon 2006. Since then I entered but had to withdraw from Flora London Marathon 2008 due to injury. After having to take months off to recover I am now ready and willing to become a runner again!

5K series and Eye Handicap

I've had two races this week. The first was on Wednesday and it was the third 5K race in a series of 5 over at Ferry Meadows. It was the same course as Race 1 and after a day of rain the sun decided to come out and shine down on all of us. It was going to be far too warm for me to do a PB so I decided to just run the race and try and enjoy it. My friend Rhona had chosen to run this as well, so I kept with her. To be honest, I don't think I could have gone much faster as my legs still felt a bit heavy from Sunday's race.

Distance: 5K
Time: 27:58
Ave pace: 9.00 min miling

The second race was a Handicap race over at Eye. This time, after a day of complete sunshine, the heavens opened about an hour before the race and we had a big thunderstorm! The distance was just under 4 miles and we had each been given a start time based on a previous 5 mile race. My start time was 10:13, with Yvonne just starting off about 20 seconds in front of me and Mandy about 40 seconds.

The weather conditions suited me much better so I put in a bit of an effort for this one. I could see Yvonne had caught Mandy about one third of the way round. I started off quite strong and at one point I thought I was going to catch them up but it was never to be. One guy overtook me and I managed to get back in front of him. Mandy finally pulled away from Yvonne over the last quarter of a mile. I was gaining ground but I just couldn't make up enough. If it had been a longer distance I may have done a bit better but, all in all, I was pleased with my performance.
I don't have the results of my time yet but will update when they come through.

Bushy 25th Anniversary 10K

Our jogging club has been going for 25 years. That's some achievement! And its going from strength to strength with many new faces joining us all the time.

Today, we held a 10K to celebrate the 25th Anniversary and invited several other jogging clubs in the local area to take part.

My target today was to beat the club record for the 10K in my age category! Time to beat: 55:40 set in 2001. I knew it was possible as I had run a faster time for the 6 mile run at Whissendine on Thursday but unfortunately that run didn't count as it was a 6 mile run and not a 10K.

I set off from the starting line a bit faster than I would normally but felt ok so pushed on. By halfway round I knew I was on schedule and could allow myself to just pull back a bit to keep my breathing under control and not blow out!

I missed the 8K marker and by the time 9K appeared, a fellow Bushfield lady was hot on my tail. Her name is Yvonne and she had just joined the club and looked to be in the same age group as me! Oh no, I wasn't about to put in this effort and then not achieve the club record right on the line. I could tell she was struggling a bit whereas I felt I had just kept enough in reserve to push myself forward. I stretched out and prayed that she wouldn't keep with me. I could see the finishing line ahead and went for it managing to stay in front - this time.

Whissendine 6

All day long the weather had been alternating between showers and sunshine but the rain stayed away for the run.
Whissendine is a lovely village just outside Oundle, very picturesque and also very HILLY! It was a charity run and the village had set up raffle stalls, BBQ, and there was a general feeling of goodwill and cheer with lots of spectators at the start and finish.

My plan was to start off steady and just see how my legs were feeling on the night. The course started off with a downhill section immediately followed by, you've guessed it! an UPHILL section that definitely took out a few people! Once I had recovered from the first hill I got into my stride and tried to enjoy the run, taking in the countryside. I particularly remember Mile 4 being one big hill, going on and on and on......

Thankfully, the half mile leading into the finish was on a downhill section. I was very pleased with my run, especially taking into account the hills - I know I'm not good on hills. In fact, there was another lady runner who kept overtaking me on the hills and then I would catch her up on the flat and this went on throughout the run. Unfortunately, she just beat me to the line!

Went to the club on Tuesday for a run, Rhona came along too. It was a warm evening and we ran the Frostbite route, taking it easy. I thought my legs had recovered from Saturday's long run but once we set off I found my legs quite heavy. All in all, a pleasant run.

Saturday morning long run

Super run on Saturday morning. I woke up to a nice sunny morning and filled the biggest water bottle I owned as we intended to do a long run, around about the 2 hour mark.

We all met up at the car park, there were 8 of us in total, all of differing abilities, but we all started off together. Around the hour mark, 3 started to make their way back home which left 5. Not long after that, another one veered off home.

That left the 4 of us, Sheila, Mandy, Laura and Me. We were going well keeping the pace nice and steady. It was a bit warm but not too scorching and I was managing well with my water, taking sips every now and again.

We were on our way back and Laura went the quick way home, just cutting it short by a couple of minutes and the three of us carried on to the car park. I felt good, in fact I felt I could have probably carried on for a bit longer - that's a great way to finish a long run.

You can see, if you click on the map and then click on Analyser you that our mile splits weren't very fast, but that wasn't the plan for today, we wanted a long run that was enjoyable - and it certainly was!

5K Series - Race 2 - Eye

Map of 5K Series Race 2 Eye

As you can see from the smiles, the race went well and without incident!

We were lucky with the weather again, rain before the race and just after but not during it. Not that I would have minded, but good news for the marshalls and spectators!

It was a good course, 2 1/2 K out and then turning back on itself, which could have been dispiriting seeing all the front runners on their way back when you are still running out, but in fact it was great to see and cheer on our fellow club runners - lots of encouragement could be heard!

My time was only a few seconds slower than Race 1 and considering the route which had a few more hills in it and there it was quite windy, I'm pleased with that and the very best thing, I was ok at the end, no legs seizing up etc. I had prepared a lot better for this run, pasta at lunch and a banana sandwich an hour or so before the run but I think the biggest factor was that it wasn't too hot.

Monday evening

I ran a long run on Saturday morning and I have the 5K race on Wednesday, so with that in mind I decided not to go to the club on Tuesday night. Instead, Sheila and I arranged to go out on Monday whilst my son was having his guitar lesson with her husband, Mike.

We set off at a good pace and managed to keep it going most of the way. It was a very humid evening and rain was never far off - in fact, just after we had finished it poured down!

I'm rather wary of Wednesday's 5K after what happened to me at the last one! I'm going to just see how it goes on the night but I'm definitely going to be better prepared for it. I have pasta for lunch and will have a banana sandwich about an hour before the start, which is 7.30. The weather is so unpredictable at the moment, one minute torrential downpours followed by sun, which is amazingly warm. We even had hailstones yesterday! Whilst I'm not wishing for a repeat of the hailstones, I certainly hope the sun isn't out in it's full glory.

Been a bit slack this week, not only in my running but in writing up my blog.

I went to the club on Tuesday night but there weren't many people there - I think several of them had volunteered to marshal the Race of Life run that was on that evening. However, Laura turned up so I had a running buddy and we stuck together. It was a cool evening, slightly drizzly and we had a good run, about 5 miles.

My legs had still been feeling a bit grumpy around the groin from last Wednesday's 5K so I thought I would give myself a complete rest from exercise and skip Thursdays run.

I met up on Saturday morning with Sheila, Laura and Rhona and the intention was to run for about 1 1/2 hours. The weather forecast for this weekend was terrible, very bad thunderstorms and torrential rain but it managed to hold off for our run. We ran for an hour and Rhona decided that was enough for her. We carried on, intending to run another 3 miles or so, but actually ended up running for another 45 minutes - so I guess we probably ran about 10-11 miles in total.

I certainly felt tired towards the end of the run but definitely a sense of achievement as well.

Yaxley 7

I had been out for a couple of slow jogs since Wednesday to "test" my legs and they felt a bit tired and aching but nothing much more than that so I decided to go ahead with the run on Sunday. I was determined to take it easy though and not get too carried away.

The weather wasn't looking good, very bad thunderstorms and heavy driving rain! By the time our race started however, the heavy rain had moved on and we were only left with a very slight drizzle. Our jogging club had a good turnout, about 10 of us had turned up. I set off from the starting line and lost sight of Laura, managed to see her and then stuck together for the rest of the run as we had a good comfortable pace going. There was a lovely spirit about the run, lots of support on the streets and terrific marshalling.

The route started off with a hill! That sorted a few of us out and spread the field, there was a lap and then the hill again towards the end. I think between miles 4 to 5, was a bit hard going, it seemed to take forever to see the Mile 5 marker.

I wore my Garmin and have managed to work out how to download the run. If interested, you can click on the map and see more information about the run.

Post race review

I can now officially say I have had the most embarrassing moment of my life. When I told my husband this, he asked if I had come last. No, oh no, coming last is not embarrassing - someone has to. It was worse than that!

But before I go on to the most embarrassing moment of my life, I'll say a little bit about the race. There was a good turnout, especially from our jogging club - about 10 of us I think. The mood was good and although I can't say we were exactly looking forward to the race, we weren't actually dreading it - after all, it's only 5K.

There had been a little bit of rain half an hour before the start but that had cleared up and the sun was out. At the start line I saw a very old friend, Alan and his daughter Katie. Wished them luck and got back in line behind them.

The start was a bit stumbling but we soon got spread out. I set off at a good pace, pushing it but holding a bit back. Sheila, Mandy and Alan set off much faster and I didn't try to keep with them. I was looking out for the first K marker and started counting down. The course was 2 laps round the lake so coming round to the 2K marker I could see the 4K marker as well. I kept up the pace, overtaking on the way, and I had Mandy in my sights. I eventually caught Mandy at just gone 4K. The effort to catch her was enough for me and she eventually pulled away again just before the finish.

I came through the finish line and felt dreadfully thirsty. I went in search of water but couldn't find the table. I remember asking someone and they pointed me in the right direction. It was at this time my most embarrassing moment started!

I could feel my legs starting to seize up - it felt a bit like cramp. I couldn't walk, my calf muscles and the tops of my legs in the groin area were tightening up. I saw one of my team mates and called them over and said I was desperate for a drink and that I couldn't walk, my legs were cramping up.

They called over the physios and I had to lay down right in the middle of the field in the midst of all the runners. Oh my, it was a good job I was already red in the face from the run!

They massaged my legs and although the calf muscles were beginning to ease, my groin felt really painful and I couldn't bend, to either sit up or stand. After 5-10 minutes of massage I was helped to stand. I began to move around and someone got me a power drink - that tasted absolutely wonderful.

I got offers of lifts home but as I only lived about a mile away, I thought it would be good to walk. I started out slow and could feel my legs slowly easing back into life by the time I got home.

The next day, my legs felt extremely stiff, especially my right calf and the groin. That evening I went for a very gentle jog followed by a swim. My legs ached a bit but after a few minutes I felt fine jogging and at the start of the swim, my groin was very sore. Eventually it loosened up and I felt fine.

I've looked up what could have been the cause of my problems and I think it was something to do with electrolyte imbalance. I think what I have learned from this is that I chould not under-estimate the effort it takes to run a race, even if it is only 5K. I know I suffer badly in the sun and heat and it was a very warm evening. I should have taken a water bottle round with me but I didn't because, again, it was only 5K. I hdn't had enough to eat that day, especially carbo-rich foods.

On Sunday I had planned to run the Yaxley 7 (miles). I still intend to but this time I think I will take a sports drink around with me, plan a carbo-rich lunch and most importantly, take it easy and enjoy the run!

Sunday morning

Ran on Sunday with Laura and Rhona. Rhona is just getting back into it and Laura had a busy day ahead, so we planned to take it easy and run for about an hour. The weather was good and it was a very enjoyable run.

I’ve been having a play with my Garmin and can work out a few extra things on it. I’ve splashed out and upgraded my membership to Motionbased which means I can analyse my runs more thoroughly – in reality it means I can have a bit more fun with the stats. I am now able to see how fast (or slow) I ran each mile – particularly useful when it comes to races.

I’m getting a bit worried about Wednesday’s 5K race. It’s the first in a series of 5 and I’ve managed to convince Laura and Sheila to run them as well. We know it will be a good speed training session and that’s the reason we are doing them, but I’ve got an awful feeling I shall be left standing on the starting line. These 5K races draw in the very fast runners who take it incredibly seriously but hey, what the heck, I’ve as much right as them to be there. Let’s hope they don’t start packing up before I’ve even made it back!

Thursday Evening

In typical great British weather, it absolutely poured on Thursday night's run. What a change from Tuesday with the sun full out! I must say, I much preferred Thursday's run - I just can't take the heat.

I decided to take it much easier on Thursday. After seeing that I ran 9.10 pace on Tuesday, I realised why it seemed such a hard run! That's very close to my race pace!

I turned my Garmin on while we were huddled outside waiting to start but it took ages to track the satellites. By the time they were found, everyone had started. I had to put in a bit of an effort to catch my little group up but eventually did so about 1/2 mile down the road but I took it easy from then on.

I think maybe it took so long to track the satellites because I was stood sheltering under a building rather than being in the open? Bit silly really sheltering as I was soon out in the open getting very wet!

It's arrived, my Garmin Forernner 205!

Got it charged up, had a play and then took it out for its first run last night.

It felt a bit strange at first, after all, even though it is neat and sleek, it's still quite a hefty thing to have around the wrist.

It was a big turn out for our running club and yet again another couple of new members. It was a very warm, muggy evening and most of us had turned up in shorts and vest. I took my water bottle along, and it was much needed.

The pace was pretty zippy and I hung in there as usually I am a much slower starter. After a while I settled down and for the next couple of miles it was good. I then found it quite hard going, the sun was draining me of all energy and I longed for the shade of the woods.

I just hung on in there and was so pleased when we got to the finishing straight.

I was keen to get home and upload my run to the MotionBased Agent software that I had previously downloaded. Once done, I was able to see that I had run a total time of 55:07 at 9:12 pace. However, I had a moving time of 55:00 at 9.10 pace (must have been the traffic lights)and I ran a distance of 5.99 miles. Brilliant, no more guesswork.

There are lots of other things you can find out and various ways of seeing the run on satellite maps, street maps, etc. I'm not sure whether these maps can be exported to a blog and would be very interested if anyone else knows the answer to that.

Now, if only it could actually do the run for me......

Saturday morning

It seemed to be pretty warm out there and I was going out a bit later than normal, so I planned to do a nice and easy run at a very comfortable pace. I thought about 8 miles would be a good distance and chose my favourite run which I discovered last year. I put it on You Tube and I am excited to say it has even been commented on!

All was going well, I was right about the weather and was very pleased I had taken my water bottle with me, I had to stop at the Golf Club half way round and do a refill. I was enjoying the run until about a mile from home.

As I was running up a long track a woman with her three children and dog were just ahead of me. As I drew close her dog bounded up to me barking. I stopped and she called him back, saying sorry. I started to run off when the dog came after me again. She called him back saying that he was usually so friendly she couldn't understand why he was barking at me. I was beginning to lose my cool by now. I asked her to put the dog on its lead or at least hold on to it, so I could get away. As I was saying this a cyclist came past, and grinning said to her, "Don't worry, he's alright".

Well, I exploded! I shouted after him asking whether he would like to be chased by a barking dog on his cycle. He turned back to look at me and I said "Yes, YOU! How would you like it?"

The lady by this time had hold of her dog, still saying how friendly he is!

Ggggrrrhhhh....

At least it pumped through enough adrenalin to keep me going to the end of my run, lol.

Eye Charity 5

The Eye Charity 5 Road Race was an excellently run (lol) event. The money raised goes towards Eye Running Club's chosen charity, hence the title. The organisation of this event was excellent, there were plenty of marshals, water provided half way round and loads of support. The course itself is a bit of a blurry memory. I don’t really take too much notice of what’s around me, most of my concentration is on the person in front of me and whether I can catch them up! From what I do remember it was mainly on the flat with one or two little hills interspersed along the way.

I started off at a "just a little bit faster than normal comfortable pace" and was quickly left towards the back of the field – everyone else just seemed to zoom off! I held back and gradually increased my pace once I had settled into my stride. I remember passing through Mile 1 at 8:30 and feeling very pleased with that. I could see a couple of our club members up ahead and could tell that I was very gradually gaining on them. I passed through Mile 2 at about 17.30. I felt ok, legs felt strong but I had to concentrate on my breathing, taking deep breaths every now and again.

The field had really spread out by now and I was running down a very long track with a loop out to the right and then going left up on the road. This meant that when I came to the end of the track I could see runners the other side of the track running the other way, it could have been a little bit disheartening but I didn't mind, it was good to see some familiar faces. I was now at Mile 3. I can’t remember the rest of the split times, I just knew that I was doing ok. I caught up with the two club guys in front and managed to push on ahead of them. There was a little bit of a hill between 3 ½ mile and 4 ½ miles which I struggled with, but I had enough left in me to push it hard for the last ½ mile to the finish. It was very uplifting, coming in and hearing my fellow club runners cheering me on. Thanks guys!

I'm quite pleased with my time - I'm still on the mend and hopefully my times throughout the year will steadily improve.

Here are the positions.

The next day following the very hilly Corby 5, my legs weren't aching as much as I thought they might be. However, the aching kicked in the day after that (Friday) - all up the front part of my leg (shin?). I think it must have been from the downhill section!

I went out for a little jog that evening to try to stretch them out and it seemed to work. I didn't go far nor too fast - just round the big lake at Ferry Meadows and through the Nature Reserve - about 3.5 miles.

I was away over the weekend in London so no long run but it felt like I must have walked a marathon the amount of walking we did!

Went along to the club last night and just did a 5 mile run, we have a race coming up on Thursday so we decided to save ourselves for then!

Corby 5 Road Race

Laura, Sheila and myself decided that we must have been having an adrenaline rush when we had arranged to run the Corby 5!

The weather forecast was not good - dark clouds threatened and we wondered what we were letting ourselves in for! However, we needn't have worried, the sky cleared and the sun peeped through. It was warm enough to wear shorts and vest.

The scenery on the way to East Carlton was terrific - we passed through some lovely quaint villages and the landscape was breath-taking. I didn't know that there were so many BIG hills within an hour's drive of Peterborough!

The race start was at East Carlton Countryside Park which is
situated on the edge of the beautiful Welland Valley. The park offers splendid views over the Welland Valley, and is a haven for wildlife, with its variety of habitats. The open parkland has a children's play area, a picnic area, a garden for the visually impaired, and an Alpine garden.

There are three nature trails around the park, which pass through woods and meadows, and by the water gardens and ponds. Britain's largest Boled Lime Tree can be found in the park.

Contained within a former coach house is the Heritage Centre, containing a permanent exhibition covering the history of steelmaking in Corby, craft workshops, and a cafe which provides hot and cold snacks throughout the year.

When we arrived we tried not to feel intimidated by all the other runners there - they seemed to be very keen and looked so very fit. We registered and collected our numbers and set off for the start. Laura's dad was also running and we met Matt and Hailey from our running club at the start line, as well.

The gun went and that was the last we saw of Laura's dad, Sheila, Matt and Hailey until the finish. Laura and I set off at a more comfortable pace and managed to keep it going, even up and down the hills. The hills were very hard work and took their toll on the legs but the views more than made up for it - it really was one of the loveliest runs I have done. A superb hilly 5 mile race, one I will definitely be marking it down in my calender for next year!

Monday morning recovery run

As was to be expected, I was fairly stiff and aching over the weekened after my looong Saturday morning run!

I had arranged with Sheila and Laura that if I was around I would meet up with them on Monday morning to run a short 45 minute recovery run.

I set the alarm and on waking looked out the window to check on the weather; not too wet and windy so, as agreed, met up with them. We ran around the lake at Ferry Meadows and went up into the woods and then made our way back. It was a good morning, my legs felt quite heavy but not too bad. There were one or two little hills and I could really feel it there but knowing it was only going to be about 45 minutes was enough to keep me going.

We ran along and made arrangements for our next run - Wednesday - Corby 5. We know this to be a very hilly race. Now, I'm not good on hills - so, I'm going to treat this as a training run and just be happy to finish it!

Saturday morning long run

Laura and Sheila had planned to run the Brandon Half Marathon this weekend but, somehow, their entries to the race never got through. By the time they realised this, the race was full! So, not wanting their training efforts to be wasted, they decided to run their very own half marathon!

I decided to tag along and do part of the run with them and also Marianne and Lisa wanted to give it a go aswell, so a grey, drab and drizzly (my perfect running conditions!) Saturday morning saw the five of us, up and out the door at 8.00 am.

We decided on a route which would give plenty of opportunity to break off when either one of us felt we had had enough. It was part of my 8 mile run that I ran last year when training for the Great Eastern Half Marathon, with an extra bit in the middle.

I started off feeling comfortable, my legs felt strong and breathing was good. It was a comfortable pace being able to chat as we went along. Not long into the run the rain stopped but the weather remained perfect for running.

After about an hour Marianne and Lisa split off and headed back but as I still felt ok I decided to hang on in there and see how much further I could go. At about 1:15 my legs started to feel a bit tired - I hadn't run this far since last year and I could definitely start to feel it.

We kept the pace going and we were already on our way back. The miles slipped by and before I knew it we had been running for 1:45. I had packed a sports bag with my swimming kit and change of clothing and my husband had taken it with him when he went to the gym, so at the nature reserve bridge I left Sheila and Laura and carried on up to the gym. There is a bit of a hill on this last stretch and my legs were so very heavy at this point. I pushed on knowing that I only had a couple of hundred metres left and arrived at the gym tired but completely elated! I couldn't believe it - I had just run over 11 miles!

Tuesday evening

I went along to the jogging club on Tuesday evening, not quite sure how my legs would feel after Sunday's run.

I needn't have worried - they felt fine.

I started off at the back of the pack but soon got into my stride and pulled away with Matt. We kept a good pace going, even though it was still a very warm and muggy evening.

We ran a route over to Alwalton meadow, to the railway line and back through FM and up Cherry Orton hill back to the sports centre.

It was great, my legs felt really strong. Can't understand it because I was sure they would feel a bit heavy. Never mind, not going to complain, lol.

I checked my time for when I last ran this run with Ann, and I did it 4 minutes faster this time! Good to see some improvement. I put it down as 6 miles last time, but after running it today, I felt I was running as fast as or nearly as fast as Sunday's 10K pace, so I'm guessing it's a bit more than 6 miles.

Deeping 10K

Yes, a 10 k race!!

Not at all sure I was ready for a 10K race, I decided to approach it as my usual weekend training run. Rhona wasn't able to come running on Saturday morning due to her participating in the Moonwalk on Saturday night, Well Done Rhona!

So, Sunday morning saw me, Sheila, Laura and Mandy runnning in the Deeping 10K.

Well, whatever happened to the weather! If you have been following me in my quest for mid-life fitness, you will know that I like nothing more than a cool, drizzly weatherfront! Oh no, not today. The "good" weather decided to return - the sun was out with a vengeance.

Great if I had a BBQ to look forward to, but a 10K race?

So, we set off. Didn't see Sheila again until the end! Mandy and Laura were with me for the first 1K. I ran with Ron, good ol' Ron. We had a nice comfortable pace, all looking good. We started off steady, catching and overtaking when we could. At about 4K Ron's shins started playing up. I felt ok and he encouraged me to go on, keeping the pace steady.

I could see Mandy and Laura ahead of me. I kept the same distance between us for the next couple of K's. I could see Mandy pulling ahead of Laura.

I thought I could catch Laura by 8K. At 8K I was just a little behind. I put in a bit of an effort and caught her at 9K. Stayed with her a bit but she was looking to beat her previous 10K time and put in a spurt for the last 1/2 K. I wasn't going to go with her - I had promised myself to not do anything silly - I wanted to fnish this run with a bit extra left and not completely knackered!

I came in just 30 seconds or so behind her. I was pleased with my run. I was able to carry on this afternoon with my usual routine rather than being completely zonked out, which is how I usually feel after a race!

When I went to bed last night, I was very surprised to see I had caught the sun! I knew it was hot, but not that hot!

Thursday evening was a "Club Pub Run".

To explain: Our club hosted the event. A few years ago, a member of the club organised the event. Unfortunately he died and not long after his wife died aswell. Our Club Chairman was a very good friend and has continued honouring his friend, by continuing to organise the run each year.

A few local clubs are invited to join in and we all start off at the designated spot, obviously just a few yards away from the pub, "The Plough". The course is 6 miles, across beautiful scenic countryside with lots of local wildlife. It's not a race as such, just something a run to enjoy.

Afterwards, we all have a meal and a raffle is held. Each club has brought along some gifts for the raffle. At the end of the evening, each club's name is put into the hat and the winning club decides which charity the money goes to which was raised by the raffle - just over £100.

BTW: I didn't actually run the 6 miles - What the Heck, I wasn't going to sit there all evening red faced (which is what I usually look like after running 6 miles) so myself and a couple of others, just ran a couple of miles out and then turned back again.

It was a lovely evening, a group of people coming together through their love of running.

Tuesday evening

Got drenched again last night!

Good news is that my trainers seemed to be okay. No blisters or bruised toes.

We ran the Frostbite route which is 5 miles. I ran with Ron again, and we had a good pace going. Not too pushy but enough to make me feel like I had worked!

Saturday morning

Someone please remind me not to have wine on the night before a run!

I woke up with the feeling of having one glass too many the night before.....

Still, it was a nice morning, no rain, and Rhona and I ran the same run as last week. It was a good run, we caught up on our news and the run seemed to go by pretty quickly. My legs felt good. I see we did practically the same time as last week. Very consistent, lol.

I went into town in the afternoon and bought a new pair of running shoes, something I had been promising myself for ages. I didn't splash out, just bought a basic pair. Hopefully, at my ability, they will serve me well.

Thursday Evening

Another run with the running club. Not such a good run tonight - the weather wasn't so good, not that it bothered me. I don't mind the rain, I'd rather it was raining than the sun out, if truth be told. No, it was more the legs, the poor ol' legs.....

I don't know, for some reason, they just didn't want to play. It was really hard going, especially the first couple of miles. My hamstrings felt really tight and my legs were heavy.

I stopped and stretched a bit, and I guess they felt a bit better after that. The rain was coming down a bit harder and I felt like cutting it short and heading back, but after another mile I started to loosen up a bit.

I hung on in there and managed to do the full course: 1 mile out to the business park, 4 laps round it (one mile each lap) and then a mile back to the start.

The group this evening was a bit segmented, I eventually ended up running with Ron. It was a nice, easy pace and a comfortable run, eventually!

Distance: a short 6 - (we took a bit of a shortcut back)

Tuesday evening

Last night I nearly got carried away, nearly, but got drawn back in by Ron, our club chairman.

We started out from the club and split into our little groups. I hung back from my former running friends and ran with Ann again. Just behind us were a group of 3, Ron included. After a mile or so, Ann wanted to drop back but as I felt ok, I decided to go on.

I hadn't gone very far when Ron called me back. I thought he had something to say, but when he joined me, he reminded me that I had said I was pushing myself too much, too soon. Aaahh, those words of wisdom.

I duly hung back and ran the rest of the run with this small group.

It was a good decision - I really, really enjoyed the run. The weather was perfect, the company great and the scenery beautiful - and - it wasn't a struggle, it was a joy to be out running. Cheers Ron!

Saturday morning

A bit dull this morning - no sign of the sun yet. But, for me, great running weather.

Met with Rhona at 8.00 am and we ran along the path by the train track taking us into Castor Heights and then along the road into the back of Ferry Meadows. We then carried on round the lake and through the nature reserve.

Great weather for running and a chance for us to catch up on our news!

Thursday morning

Considering I had run a long run on Tuesday evening, I wasn't aching too much on Wednesday.

I got up early on Thursday and went to the gym. The weather wasn't too great so I decided to go on the Treadmill, also I was a bit short on time.

So, I did 25 minutes on the treadmill and then 10-15 minutes swimming.

Tuesday evening

Last Friday I had been discharged from the Hospital so it was with confidence that I returned to the Running Club on Tuesday evening. It was a beautiful evening, the sun was out and there was a cool gentle breeze.

On this return, I was determined not to get carried away and run with my usual group of runners. I hung back at the start and let them get ahead. I was then able to go at my own pace and another runner called Ann joined me. We stuck together for the duration of the run. It was a comfortable pace for most of the way, but a lot longer than I had been running for a while. Towards the end I was finding it a struggle, but we stuck in there and kept it going.

It was a lovely run, going down to the River and across the meadows. We then ran towards Castor but cut off the road and went down the track by the railway line. We then ran around the small lake and then on back to the start.

Saturday morning

Saturday morning saw me out of the door at 8.00 am to meet Rhona.

Rather than running round the lake again, we ran along the footpath by the river, crossing over at the weir and then running back along the river on the other side.

It was a lovely morning, still a bit chilly but perfect for running.

Ever competitive, with a mile to go and a female jogger just in front of us, we put in a spurt and overtook her!

It was a good run and for the first time in ages, I actually enjoyed it!

Friday morning

I must be mad!

I set the alarm clock for 5.45 am and got up so I could get my run in before going to work.

I finish work at 4 o'clock so I could easily go then, it's just my willpower evaporates during the day and I find it extremely hard to get myself out there.

So, although it's hard getting up, at least the run is done and during the day I am entitled to feel very pleased with myself, lol.

This morning I again drove to the gym, parked up and then went for a run.

I chose a different route this morning, turning right out of the gym and cutting in at a pathway and crossing over the weir. Along the path and through the nature reserve back up to the gym. It was a very pretty run, I saw a couple of other joggers out but most of the time it was quite solitary and peaceful.

I didn't have very long to swim so just did a couple of lengths to stretch out and had five minutes in the jacuzzi - bliss.

Wednesday morning

Set my alarm clock at 5.45 and managed to get myself out of bed. Gosh, the temptation to just reset the alarm and go back to sleep was enormous!

Had some breakfast and pottered about for an hour, waiting for the breakfast to go down I'm just not one of those people that can get up and then be out running within the next ten minutes or so, it takes me a lot longer to get going.

Although it was too early for the sun to be shining, I thought it would be warm so for the first time this year I put my shorts on! What a sight to be seen, wobbly cellulite pounding the roads!!

I was right though, it was warm, very warm.

I started off quite good, but for the last mile I slowed considerably. Still, never mind. That's another run under my belt.

Actually, I just looked back over previous runs, and I ran this a couple of minutes faster than last time, so that's cheered me up a bit!

Monday morning

I couldn't decide whether to run before work or swim? Or should I swim before work and run after work? Decisions..... decisions.....

In the end I decided to get up early, drive to the gym, park up and go for a run and then I am already there so I could follow it on with a swim!

It was a beautiful morning and with just that extra bit of time up before going out running, my body seemed much better to cope with it. I didn't go too far, about 3 miles I think. The first couple of miles seemed pretty easy but I must admit to struggling a bit for the last mile.

It was great to swim afterwards. I could feel the stretches and knew it was doing me good, easing my aching muscles. And it worked, because during the day my legs felt fine and no aching at all.

I managed to get a couple of early morning swims in before work on Thursday and Friday.

Today, I met up with Rhona and we went out on our Saturday morning run. Rhona is recovering from a shoulder operation so she is feeling as dispirited as me. We both struggled round the lake but are filled with hope knowing that we have done it before, so the future is bright.

OMG - has it really been 18 days since I last went for a run! No wonder it was so difficult!!!

Nothing at all to do with all the Easter Eggs and Chocolate I've been consuming!!

I've been really busy the last couple of weeks but that's not a good enough excuse really - I guess I've been putting off that first run back. Cos then, it's back to running regularly, isn't it?

So, excuses behind me, I got up this morning with the idea of doing some form of exercise. At first I had thought about swimming but as I was just putting off the inevitable I decided to don my running shoes and get out there!

It was hard, really hard. My hips seemed very stiff and my legs were buckling at the knees. I wasn't going fast enough to get out of breath so no struggling there, lol. I think I need to be out of bed a lot longer than 1/2 hour for my body to wake up, haha.

Gosh, the run last night was exhausting! At the very start my hamstrings felt tight and so I knew it was going to be a tough one – I hung back from running with George as I seem to get carried away when I am with him. I thought that by taking it easy and not pushing it that it would be a comfortable run but I never seemed to get into my pace and I found it hard going all the way round.

Now that the clocks have gone forward by one hour it meant that Tuesday evening's run was in daylight – and what a joy that was! It was a lovely run, through the woods and down by the rowing lake and then back up through the woods – it’s just a shame I wasn’t able to enjoy it.

On reflection, I think that I have gone back to the running club too soon. I am always worried that I am pushing it too much and that I still may do some damage to my stomach. I try not to run hard but don’t seem to be able to stop myself from going off with my old running partners.

With that in mind, I have decided to give the running group a miss for the time being and just take things a bit easier on my own. I am still aiming to run 2-3 times a week, but limit myself to about ½ hour and gradually build up my strength and speed.

That’s the plan!

Initially I had thought about doing my old 8 mile run on Saturday morning but after giving it a lot of thought I decided that it was probably a bit too soon to be covering that distance. I was disappointed but knew it wouldn't be too long before I would be able to run that far.

I set out from the Health Club with a route in mind, not exactly sure how far it would be. In fact, it is part of my 8 mile run as on that circuit I run past the Health Club probably just about over half way round the course. It was tempting to add on little loops ie round the rowing lake or up past the railway line to the bridge but I stuck to my planned run and just looked out for extra loops I could add on when I was a bit fitter.

I came in back round the big lake and, boy, was it windy! I was running head into the wind and it was real good when I turned up and had the wind behind me!

On getting back to the Health Club I got changed into my swimming gear and had a 15 min swim to stretch out my leg muscles. It seems to work as my legs don't seem to ache so much after having the swim.

Big turn out on Thursday at the running club and it was decided to do efforts. I thought it best to opt out as I think it is a bit too soon after my op.

Mandy and I decided to do a steady run and set off, along with everybody else but not joining in the efforts! After about 3 miles the main group turned off to run back a different way but Mandy and myself carried on. Just a bit further on we could see George and a couple of other runners, so speeding up slightly we eventually managed to catch them up. By now, I was warmed up and decided to push it for a bit longer, George came with me and the two of us pulled away from the others.

We stayed in front coming in a minute or so before Mandy, Alan and Sheelagh.

I'm not entirely sure it was sensible to be pushing myself like that, but I felt ok so went along with my body and how it was feeling.

I went home and had a nice warm bath to ease my leg muscles and slept very well that night!

Tuesday night saw me back up at the running club. The weather had been pretty poor all day and I had been giving it second thoughts but decided that it really didn't matter what the weather was doing.

As it happened it was a great night, the rain stayed away and although it was a bit cold, I soon got warm and discarded the running gloves a couple of miles into the run.

I had two new running companions, Mandy and Sharon. Mandy is training for the London Marathon and had run a half marathon at the weekend, so didn't want to push it too much and Sharon had had three weeks off with illness, so we were evenly paced.

It was a nice route, about 4'ish miles and a steady pace.

I went to the running club on Thursday evening and had a fab time... I had promised myself to take it easy and stick to the back runners but yes, you've guessed, I got a bit carried away and forged ahead!

It felt so good to be back there along with my running chums and there were a couple of new faces as well. We set off at a fair pace and I thought I would go with it for as long as I could and it was only the last 1/2 mile or so that I really began to feel the lack of fitness. I was also getting very hot and finished with quite a red face.

We ran about 5 miles I think which I am really pleased with. It wasn't a great time and I really felt every mile in my legs by the end but, all in all, a good evening's work.

OK, so it's Monday now and I managed to get out for a run again. I went to the Health Club when I finished work at 4.00 pm and did the run that I did on Saturday but going the other way round.

It's so hard, starting again. My legs just don't feel like they have any strength in them, they are pounding away but with no push off. I guess it was like this before and I will get better again, I'm not going to get despondent, that won't get me anywhere, it's just time and patience and lots more runs........

After my run I went for a swim to stretch out, it feels so good. Next run on Thursday at the running club - I hope they babysit me and treat me carefully!

After my run last week I suffered a bit with a sore stomach - I don't think it was due to the run but more to the coughing! I decided to play safe and leave the running until I felt a bit better and my cough had cleared up.

A week later.....

Feeling slightly better, well stomach not aching now but still coughing a little, I thought I had better have another run. I went to the Health Club and got changed there and went for a run from there. It was pretty much my usual run but just starting and ending at a different destination. The pathways were still flooded and there was a bit of wading! I did a loop which took my 30:48 so I'm guessing it is about 3 miles.

I then went into the Health Club and had a 20 minute swim. I love ending the run with a swim as I'm sure it is a really good stretching workout as I never seem to ache nowhere near as much after I have been swimming.

I feel I'm ready now to really get back into running. I'm trying for 3 times this week starting with tomorrow, Monday, again driving to the Health Club on my way home from work, doing the run from there and ending with a swim.

Saturday, March 03, 2007

After running two consecutive days, I didn't have time to run again until today.

The weather was glorious, sunny and just a little breeze. However, I had not realised how much rain we had had in the past couple of days and some of the paths were flooded with water up to my ankles!

I waded through and carried on - it could have been worse!

I ran round the big lake and through the nature reserve. It was hard going, it is as if my legs have forgotten how to run! My stride length has completely shortened. I have had a bit of a chest and sore throat for a couple of days and, in ideal circumstances I wouldn't have run today, but I am so desperate to get back out there. I was Ok, just about managing to get round without puffing and wheezing. I've a lot of hard work ahead of me. My stomach muscles seemed to be alright, I could feel I had worked them but they weren't painful so I'm guessing everything is in order.

On looking as past times I am surprised to see that I wasn't that much slower than when I used to run this route. The difference being that I was cruising through in this time whereas today it was hard work!

The run went well with no signs and symptoms of overdoing it. I had intended leaving it just 2-3 days and then go out again but I just didn’t seem to have the time! I did manage a couple of swims last week but that was about it.

Yesterday, I went for my longest run yet since the operation. It wasn’t very fast but it was an easy half hour on the treadmill at the gym followed by a short swim.

I really want to get back to running the distances I was running before but fear it is going to be a long slow struggle! It’s going to be difficult getting back and I have quite a few weeks of hard work before me but I am determined…. although not very patient!

I got up early this morning to get a run in before work – I must have chosen the darkest, windiest, rainiest day possible but by 7.00 am the wind had died down a bit and the sun had risen.

My legs were still a bit tired from yesterday's run and I guess I should have left it another day before going out again but, as I said before, I'm, not very patient and I am so keen to get back to my previous fitness.

It was hard work, especially towards the end, but it felt good being out on the roads again in the fresh air and running round the lake. This time it was the small lake, hopefully in a few weeks it will be the big lake...

I’m back – yep, recovery time over!

When I went to the hospital for my check-up the consultant said it was still too soon to jog – was I disappointed! He said to wait until at least two months so…..it is now two months!!
I have been doing the odd swim and I was surprised how much I ached afterwards, it really is surprising how quickly you lose the fitness. How depressing (glum).

I also mentioned in my previous post that I had been on the treadmill a couple of times but decided to give it a break after speaking to the Consultant.

So, tonight was my first outing on the road…. I wore my elasticated girdle to give my stomach support and decided not to go too far or too fast. Lol, I needn’t have worried, I managed “a round the loop” where I live which was 15:27, probably just over 1 mile. It was okay, didn’t feel too out of breath and the pace was comfortable but, boy, I did get hot!

So, easy does it. I’ll have a couple of days rest to see if there are any repercussions and then take it from there.
Oh, it feels sooo good to be back!

Thursday, January 25, 2007

Well, it's been so long since I was last here, lol.

My recovery period is coming to an end and it's back to work next week. I have an appointment at the hospital on Wednesday 31st Jan for a check-up - I'm pretty sure everything is as it should be - the scar line has healed up very nicely although there is still a certain amount of swelling in the abdomen still, which I guess is to be expected.

Haven't done any exercise since the operation and am very worried about getting back to fitness!

I went along to a new gym yesterday and signed up. My plan is to swim on a regular basis and to do some weight work - so hopefully getting more of a rounded form of exercise rather than just the running. I am definitely returning to the running club on Tuesdays and Thursdays and plan to run my long runs on Saturday mornings.

Whilst at the gym I had a little go on the Treadmill. I had planned to walk but wanted to see how it felt to be running so upped the speed for a slow jog - 12 min pace - and jogged a mile. My stomach felt fine but I was disappointed to note that my knees still felt a bit sore ! I had hoped with six weeks rest from running that they would be sufficiently recovered.

I then went along to the pool but only slowly swam one length as I could feel it pulling on my stomach. I think I shall wait until I have been to the hospital to see the Consultant next week before I begin my return to fitness in earnest.

Watch this space!

It feels sooo long since I have run.

The operation went well, I think. I still have a lot of swelling but I guess that is to be expected. The scar itself seems to be healing well, but the doctor had to perform a mini abdominoplasty to get the full effect so it turned into a bigger operation than I expected. It means running is out for the next few weeks!

In a way, it is a bit of a mixed blessing. My knees had really been hurting for the past few weeks and getting worse. My right knee in particular had looked kinda puffy and on googling my symptoms it seems I have "housemaid's knee" - something that can affect runners! The good news is that rest seems to be a good cure - something I'm getting plenty of.

So, I'm hoping to get back to running by the end of January.....

Sunday, December 10, 2006

I have been so tired and exhausted over the last few days since my run on Sunday that I really wasn't up for running on Thursday. I felt a bit of a cheat as the weather was so bad, very windy and rainy that I wondered if I was just kidding myself or was I really worn out?

On reflection, I probably should have given Tuesday night a miss and gone along on Thursday but hindsight is a wonderful thing!!!

Anyway, with a few days of rest in my legs I went along to our Frostbite league run today. It was at March which is a little village about 45 minutes away. I took Rhona and George with me and met all the other club runners there. We just got there in time to see the Juniors come in - I must admit it brought a tear to my eye - they were so little (ages ranging from 9 - 15) and giving it all they had got. It made me feel very humble and, later on, when I came into the finishing straight I had those little ones in mind and pushed as hard as I could in honour of them.

The run itself was more like cross country - across fields and tracks churned up and making it very hard going. I had intended to "take it easy" today and was wanting to finish in about 45 mins. George and I had had a pre-race decision not to push it too hard but enjoy it.

We were right at the back of the mob when the hooter went and I went off in what I thought was a moderate pace - everyone else went off much faster! After a few hundred yards I decided that I needed to catch them up so put on a spurt and eventually caught them about 1 mile out. They asked where I had been and I said that I thought we were taking it easy!

I tucked in behind George and tried to stick with him. A few of our comrades dropped behind and about mile 3 I just couldn't keep with George - we were going across a very open track with the wind blowing across, it was very, very muddy and really quite hard going.

I always had him in my sights but the mud was just too much for me to cope with (along with the wind). I managed to pick off a few runners in front of me and, all in all, I really enjoyed the run. It was a real change from a road run and perhaps the child in me actually enjoyed stomping through the mud!

Although I did manage to finish in just under 45 minutes it was not as easy as I had anticipated - 45 minutes on a nice flat road run would have been great but this course meant that we had to work extra hard. Just before starting it had also been mentioned to me that my time might be needed for the team event - ohhhh, just a bit of pressure to run harder than I had anticipated....

As I have said, it was a team event and the first 10 from the running club counted - 2 of which had to be lady runners. On this occasion I am proud to say that I was the 2nd lady runner of our club - hooray for the more mature lady runner!

On that note, I bid you a good evening!

Time: 44:53
Distance: a very muddy 5 miles!

Oh my golly gosh! Just had the hardest of runs!

Went along to the club with aching legs from the run on Sunday so had decided to just take it easy this evening - easier said than done! It was a nice steady pace but even that was hard work especially for the last mile or so, which had a hill tucked away in there.

Funnily enough, my knee didn't hurt one little bit on Sunday but since then it has ached quite a bit and I particularly felt it in my run this evening. I guess it's my body's way of saying "Take it Easy There Girl!"

Oh well, that's Tuesday's run done and dusted - the best thing I have done is join the Running Club - I know for a fact I would have given up running for the winter.

Time: 57 mins
Distance: 5-6

Sunday, December 03, 2006

During the night I could hear the wind howling and the rain beating down - so much so I had to close the bedroom windows!

By the time I got up the weather was still looking dismal - I could see the trees swaying and hear the wind blowing. Not ideal running conditions!

Within an hour or so it seemed the wind was dying down and the rain had stopped. Not quite sure what to wear I put on my Hally Hansen underneath my club vest but decided within minutes that I would be too hot so I discarded the Hally Hansen but stuck with my running tights - I think after last week of running in my shorts and being a bit cold that it is definitely time they were put away.

Rhona and Lindsay were also entered for the run so the three of us travelled together. We were all a bit concerned about the weather conditions and whether we had the "right" clothing on. When we got to the start I also saw Alan and Laura from the running club.

We all lined up together. My plan for this run was to take it easy at the start, not go off too fast and try to maintain pace but, most of all, to enjoy it!

The hooter went and off shot Alan, Rhona and Lindsay. I decided to hold back a bit and warm myself into it. It paid off and just over a mile I caught Rhona up. At mile 3 I overtook Lindsay and just a bit further on from there I managed to catch Alan.

I ran my own race. I kept my eye on the clock and knew that 1:30 was probably within reach as long as I just kept it steady. It was a 2 lap event and I managed to remember where a lot of the second lap mile markers were so pretty much always knew whereabouts I was. There was a fair amount of wind but had a fair share of it behind me and a fair amount of feeling like I was running through a wind tunnel! The sun came out in parts but the rain stayed away. The course was pretty much flat with a couple of underpasses to go through (twice) which were a bit of a killer and there was a stretch of track that was very muddy which was quite hard going but all in all, quite a pretty route, certainly much nicer than the route for the half marathon.

Mile 1 - 9:06
Mile 2 - 8:39
Mile 3 - 8:35
Mile 4 - 8:54
Mile 5 - 8:33
Mile 6 - 8:55
Mile 7 - 9:06
Mile 8 - 8:54
Mile 9 - 9:14
Mile 10 - 8.52

Total: 1:29

I'm very pleased with my time - I was hoping for under 1:30 but had thought the weather conditions were against me. As it's only the start of winter, I guess there are going to be much worse than today to look forward to!

Even more importantly, I'm not feeling ill which was my main aim for today.

BTW: Lindsay, 1:32 Alan 1:33,Rhona 1:37 and Laura 1:42 - subject to confirmation.

LOL. These photo's make it look like it was a beautiful day!

Only one day to go.....

I'm a bit nervous - for many reasons:

1. My knee is still a bit sore...
2. I have a sore throat...
3. I'm out tonight socialising...
4. I may be weak and have too much to drink tonight!

Hopefully, I shall be strong and keep in mind tomorrow's race.

The weather forecast is gales and storms! Not too worried about that - at least I won't put undue pressure on myself to finish in a good time.

I was in two minds whether to go to the jogging club tonight - my chest felt a bit tight and my nose had been a bit tickly all day. My throat felt a bit scratchy too. I have been feeling a bit like I may be getting a cold - and the thing is, I never get colds. Just my luck with only 5 days to go before the Nene Valley 10 on Sunday!

I decided to go along and just see how it goes... I set off with my usual running partner George, and Hayley came along with us as well. We trailed behind the faster runners of the club and soon lost them in our sights. We set our own comfortable pace and a nice running rhythm. The evening was perfect for running, just a slight chill in the air to keep me cool but no wind at all.

Laura tried to keep up with us but decided to cut it short and head back to base when we decided to take in the Business Park loop.

Funnily enough, my right knee that had been playing me up for the past few weeks was feeling okay and it was my left kneecap that felt a bit strange! Typical! But you know there's one thing I have noticed about runners - we always have to have something to worry about!

Rhona wasn’t able to make it for this morning’s run but Laura had decided to come along, so I still had a running buddy for company. It had the added benefit as Laura took me on a route that I hadn’t done before.

We encountered nearly all the elements there are: wind, rain and sun but wind seemed to be the strongest especially on the final part of the run around the lake! Surprisingly though, it was still quite mild.

I have been having a niggling problem with my right knee for the last few weeks, probably ever since the half marathon. It’s not causing me too many problems and I can’t specifically say what the problem is so I’m pretty much trying to ignore it! It feels like the back of the knee is a bit sore and it feels perhaps a little bit swollen and it’s quite hard to bend the leg in on itself – lol, not describing myself very well! I mean, when you bop down the right knee just feels funny ……

Anyway, it doesn’t seem to cause me too many problems when I am running so will just continue on and see how it goes….

NB: LMAO - as it sit here typing this up, the heavens have opened and rain is pouring out of the sky and combined with the wind, I am sooooo glad to be sat here rather than out there!

Thursday night's club training was 1 1/2 mile warm up with efforts up and down the bus lane (luckily not too many buses around that time of the evening!) followed by 1 1/2 mile warm down.

That was the plan but an old friend Laura turned up for the training who I hadn't seen for a long time. There was much to catch up on.....

Laura had run in the London Maraton in April and was still recovering from a thigh/leg/knee injury she picked up there so she had to be taking things a bit easy.

We covered the distance but didn't put much of an effort in on the efforts. It doesn't matter, there will always be another efforts evening, it was just good to be running with an old friend.

There is no way I would have gone for a run on Tuesday if I didn’t belong to the running club. It was a cold, wet and windy day and the thought of being out in the cold, let alone running in it, would have been enough to have kept me inside my nice warm house in front of the TV.

After Saturday’s run I had learnt my lesson and wore my long running bottoms. Wasn’t so sure about my top half but decided on a thermal long-sleeved top. I also took along a hat and gloves but decided against wearing them. I made the right choice as I was perfectly kitted out – the wind had dropped quite a bit and it turned out to be quite a pleasant evening.

The group set off together and after an initial chat about forthcoming events the front runners forged ahead and I settled into my nice little pack. We were going a comfortable pace, George and a couple of others had run a half marathon on Sunday so were using this as a recovery run. Because of that we decided to go a bit further at an even pace rather than shorter and faster.

I am so glad to have joined the Club – I am feeling optimistic for the future. If I can keep running through the winter months I am hopeful to see a big improvement in my running times - although I wonder if one gets to a certain age and running faster isn’t much of an option, the old body just won’t comply. We shall see….

It had been a while since Rhona and I had run 10 miles and with the Nene Valley 10 only a couple of weeks away, we thought we had better get in some mileage.

We have been so lucky with the weather, yet again a fresh crisp morning with no sign of rain. Not sure what to wear, I put on my shorts and T-shirt. I get so hot running but did wonder if I was being a bit optimistic.

We did our usual 8.2 with the rowing lake added on. The pace was comfortable and enjoyable. It wasn't until I got to the rowing lake that I began to feel my legs were quite cool, the wind was whipping up and had a very definite chill - my top half felt fine but I could feel my legs stiffening up and my knee beginning to feel slightly sore.

I think my shorts can definitely be put away for the winter!

Looking back over past times I see that we ran this 10 miles a bit faster than the last time we attempted it. It's all looking good....

I had a real good workout last night.

When I first arrived at the club I was a bit panicky, there only seemed to be two lots of groups there: the front runners and those who bring up the rear end. No George, no Alan and no Sheila to run with. Luckily, just before setting off Matt turned up.

We ran for about 1-2 miles out to where there is a rather largish hill. We then had a bit of a session up and down the hill - I managed to do 5 sets - and then back to the club. For the last 1/2 mile Matt and myself put a sprint on and raced back.

I really suffer badly at the hills when out on runs so I am very pleased to have done a hill session and hope we do lots more. The sprint back was a good workout as well, and I hopefully will feel the benefit of the sprints and hills in my next race.

The best thing about the evening though came later.... There was a meeting after the run to discuss next year's half marathon outing - Budapest 1/2 Marathon in September. I've put my name down....

And the next best thing, a lady brought along some homemade doughnuts - they were the best and most delicious doughnuts I have ever tasted - she had put a dollop of jam and cream in the middle.... yummy.

The good thing about all this running is I can practically eat what I want without putting on any weight!!!

Now that I have cut my running down to just three times a week, it is very important that I don't miss a run. On Tuesday I couldn't make it to the running club so I rushed home from work to try and get a run in before it got too dark.

I decided to run two laps round the business park which is fairly well lit apart from one stretch of pathway. On the first time of going round it wasn't too bad but just within a short space of 15 minutes it had begun to get dark and it was very noticeable on this stretch of pathway - it was quite creepy!

There was a gentle drizzle but surprisingly warm for November.

It was a record breaking entry for the race today - nearly 500 runners!

There was a spectacular atmosphere, very friendly but with an edge of competitiveness about it. We lined up for the start and I kept myself fairly near to the back along with a couple of other Busfield joggers. My running pal George went further up the front. Running conditons were great!

The gun went and it took a few seconds, which actually felt like minutes, until I crossed the start line. I set my watch off at that point and tried to find my pace. I was a bit distracted by all the runners in front of me and had to do a bit of weaving in and out to find my place. I think next time I will start further up the field. As I got to the first mile marker I set the split time but mis-read it and thought it said 9 mins +. I had been hoping to do under 45 minutes so I panicked a bit and decided to push it a bit harder. I ran on and saw George up ahead and managed to catch up with him. By the time I got to him I was in the mood for pushing it and he decided to stay back a bit. On reflection, I probably should have stayed with him!

I was running the race a little bit out of my comfort zone, my legs felt good but my lungs were definitely having to work hard. By the time I got to mile 3 - mile 4 I had a funny little turn. It was the same as when I had finished the Half Marathon - I suddenly found it hard to draw my breath and I can only equate it to what it must feel like to have an asthma attack. I tried to keep panic at bay and slowed down a bit. I did some deep breathing and eventually managed to get back into the swing of it. I just don't know what that is all about - I think I may wear a heart rate monitor for the next race and see if there is anything there to give me a clue.

As I reached Mile 4 George had caught me up. We stayed together for a while and I really appreciated his company. With half a mile to go and a small but steep hill George pulled away. Once over the hill I tried hard to keep on his tails. I never caught him but I was very close.

I think for the next race I am going to stick with George. We run very well together on our training runs and he slowly cranks up the speed - something which I think I am better suited to. I am very pleased with my times but know I can get a whole lot better!

Mile 1 8:09
Mile 2 8:14
Mile 3 8:21
Mile 4 8:22
Mile 5 8:35

On looking at these split times I am very surprised that my time from Mile 1 to Mile 2 is slower than the first mile. I definitely felt like I was pushing it a lot harder yet it shows it as being slower. Again, I am surprised that the time for Mile 3 to Mile 4 isn't a bit slower as I slowed down quite a bit to catch my breath. And, finally, I think the last mile time says it all, I was exhausted!

I am now a fully paid-up member of the jogging club and, guess what, I’m running in a race on Sunday as a club member!

Over the winter months all the local running clubs get together to form a league aptly called “The Frostbite League”. All the clubs compete against one another over a distance of 5 miles and it is the turn of our jogging club to host this month’s race.

With that in mind, we didn’t venture out too far on Thursday evening, covering a distance of around 5 miles. Again, I settled down into a small group of 3 other runners and eventually pulling ahead slightly with George. We run very easily together, our stride patterns matching perfectly. We managed to push each other on, running slightly faster than if I had been on my own.

It was an ideal evening for running and this time I still wore my running tights but opted for a short sleeved t-shirt – perfect! I’m looking forward to Sunday’s run especially with it being around my local vicinity – Steve and my daughter are coming to watch and intend to move around to see me in more than one place to encourage me and cheer me on.

It is now too dark in the mornings and evenings for me to run on my own so I have gone along to our local jogging club. They are a very friendly and enthusiastic group of runners who meet up twice a week and occasionally get together for a long run at weekends. The club is small but thriving and they enter teams in races of varying distances and, at the moment, are organising an outing to compete in the Budapest Half Marathon next year. There seems to be an active social side to the club as well!

We met on Tuesday and we sorted ourselves into pacing groups. I slotted somewhere in the middle. At first, it felt a bit strange running with a group of people but we soon settled down into a rhythm. The pace was probably slightly faster than I would have set off at but I stuck with it and soon began to feel comfortable. As is generally the case, after about 10-15 minutes I felt I could go up a gear and began to push it ever so slightly. Two other guys stuck with me and then a younger girl joined us and we were then a little group on our own.

We were intending to run 6+ miles and for 5 ½ miles I felt good but the last half mile or so was a bit more difficult – we had a couple of (short but steep) bridges to cross and a couple of underpasses to go through – which made me lose my rhythm and I lost a bit of pace. One of the guys, George, had pulled away from me and I was determined to get back up there with him! I tried hard but just couldn’t catch him.

It was a good run and I definitely worked a lot harder than if I had been on my own. It felt good to be part of a community, a like-minded group of people and such a friendly and encouraging club. I’m really looking forward to the next session.

I have been so lucky with the weather when going out on my runs - Saturday was yet again a perfect crip morning. Dressed in my running tights and long sleeved top, I think this is the regular running gear from now on - shorts have been washed and put away for the winter!

Rhona joined me and we decided to run our 8 mile run - it is such a picturesque run, just minutes away and we are in the country with a river to run by and then fields to cross, a long sloping road surrounded by vast green spaces and then on to the back of the meadows. We then have a short stretch of road but then it's back into the woods with the golf course on our right. We are back along the river, across the weir and then it's follow the steam railway line home.... as I said, perfect!

I didn't manage to get out very much last week - it's a bit hard without the motivation of a race so, with that in mind, I am entering the Nene Valley 10 mile road race beginning of December - note the new countdown timer!

I don't intend to train four times a week like I did for the half marathon training but hope three training sessions will be enough to see me through. I'm going along to the jogging club on Tuesday and will let you know how I get on....

My nails still haven't recovered from the half marathon - they're not sore but just don't look too good!!!

For one reason or another, I didn't manage to get out for a run this week until Thursday. It was a sharp crisp late afternoon and for the first time this year I put on my running tights and a thermal long sleeved top. I guessed I probably had about 30-45 minutes of daylight left so set off on a route that would take me that amount of time. I took my camera with me to try and catch the sun setting.

It felt quite strange running in these temperatures, it took a while for me to warm up and I probably could have done with some gloves and ear warmers! I have to remind myself that I was praying for weather like this in the heat of the summer!
I hadn't taken my watch with me today; I went round the lake and across through the nature reserve which is about 4 miles.
Must do more next week!
